Female Separatism

Can women in relationships with men still be part of Femthropocene?
Do you support women who want to live or work closely with men?

We support female separatism while recognizing diverse life circumstances

We support female separatism to whatever extent possible, and acknowledge situations where women may need or choose to maintain relationships with men. We accept these women as long as they don’t center men, attempt to impose men in women-specific spaces, or elevate male perspectives over women’s.

Abortion

What is your stance on abortion?

We are pro-choice and advocate for comprehensive reproductive healthcare

We believe the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancy is through poverty reduction, comprehensive sexual health education, access to and knowledge of contraceptives, and swift intervention in cases of reported sexual assault—before it may escalate to rape. We do not shame women for accessing abortion care.

Lesbians & Heterosexual Women

Are lesbians treated equally in your group?

Are straight women’s issues given priority?

Do you support lesbian-only spaces?

We respect both lesbian and straight women’s experiences and spaces

We don’t view lesbians as inherently predatory, nor do we dismiss their concerns as niche or unimportant simply because they don’t relate to straight women. We prevent the feminist movement from being derailed by heterosexual relationship drama. We respect lesbians who desire separate spaces from straight women.

Lesbians & Bisexual Women

Can lesbians be attracted to men, “trans women” or other types of males?

Do you support lesbians having separate spaces from bisexual women?

We acknowledge distinct experiences of lesbians and bisexual women

We don’t consider lesbians to be bigoted or problematic for their relational preferences when it comes to dating. We accept the distinct experiences that bisexual women and lesbians have. We do not believe that lesbians can experience sexual-romantic attraction to men, trans-identified males or males in any capacity. We respect lesbians who desire separate spaces from bisexual women as their experiences are distinct.

Racism & Culture

Do you support feminist critiques of harmful cultural practices?

Is Western feminism more correct than other feminisms?

How do you address cultural diversity in your movement?

We are anti-racist and welcome diverse cultural perspectives

We are conscious to be anti-racist and do not assume our racial, ethnic or national perspectives are inherently better, or most relevant or rational. We do not support any cultural practice that results in harm to women’s physical, psychological or spiritual well being regardless of their historical roots. We do not make blanket statements about the inferiority/superiority of other cultures and recognize the role of western imperialism, capitalism, no-liberalism, and colonialism in causing negative circumstances for global south women. Rather than relying solely on external reports about feminist issues in particular cultures, we prioritize and amplify the voices of feminist women from within those cultures.

Prostitution, BSDM & Pornography

Does your group support prostitution/sex work?

Are you anti-kink?

Is your group anti-porn?

We are critical of sex work, BDSM, and pornography

While recognizing that for a minority of women, prostitution/sex work is a relatively safe and profitable activity, we generally do not support prostitution/sex work due to its many negative effects, including it’s role in perpetuating commodification of relationships and sexuality. We do not support kinks/fetishes that endanger women physically or psychologically, but we don’t make any moral claims on other kinks/fetishes. We do not support the porn industry due to its proliferation of sex-trafficking, sexual abuse and manipulation.

Women Only Spaces

Do you include “trans women” in your group?

Do you allow nonbinary males to join your group?

We support women’s right to female-only spaces

Grounded in our belief in free association, we believe that biological women are entitled to spaces that don’t involve men, irrespective of their gender identity or degree of femininity. We don’t chastise or shame women who do not want to be in spaces with feminine males, trans-identified males, or gender non-conforming males. We believe that trans-identified males should never impose themselves on women who don’t want to be in community with them.

Trans-identified females

Are “trans-men” considered women in your group?

Do you include them in your vision of feminism?

How do you define womanhood?

We recognize shared interests between women and trans-identified females

We accept that women and trans-identified females are both female and therefore share many political interests. We believe that feminism will inherently fight for the rights of these females, but respect their choice to be separate from women-only communities. We do not accept notions of womanhood based on reductionist or stereotypical cultural or temporal narratives. A “woman” is an adult female person.

Capitalism

Does your group support capitalism?

Why do you criticize capitalist systems?

Can pro-capitalist women be part of your group?

We are critical of capitalism’s role in women’s oppression

We believe that women’s oppression is perpetuated by capitalism, and women’s liberation is closely tied to the elimination or reduction of power of the global capitalist system. Capitalism plays a central role in women’s oppression. It depends on unpaid or underpaid labor, especially domestic and care work done by women, and turns women’s bodies, time, and relationships into commodities. While some women may succeed within it, capitalism as a system deepens inequality and relies on the continued exploitation of the majority. We focus on collective liberation over individual success within oppressive systems. Pro-capitalist women are welcome to engage, but we remain critical of capitalism’s overall impact on women’s lives.
